Qu'est-ce que le past perfect ?

DÉFINITION DU PAST PERFECT
Définition

Le past perfect est un temps verbal en anglais qui exprime une action achevée dans le passé avant une autre action passée. Il est formé avec l'auxiliaire had et le past participle (participe passé) du verbe principal.

Le past perfect exprime une action antérieure à une autre action passée !

Exemples :

I had finished my homework before she arrived.

They had eaten dinner when we got there.

She had already left when I called her.

Le past perfect positif suit la structure : Subject + had + past participle

Le past perfect négatif : Subject + had not (hadn't) + past participle

  • I had not eaten → I hadn't eaten
  • He had not studied → He hadn't studied

RÈGLE POUR LES VERBES RÉGULIERS
Règle de formation

Pour les verbes réguliers, le past participle se forme en ajoutant -ed à la base du verbe :

Base verb + -ed = past participle

Donc pour le past perfect : Subject + had + base verb + -ed

Pour les verbes irréguliers, le past perfect est formé avec : Subject + had + V3 (troisième forme du verbe)

Il faut connaître la troisième forme du verbe (V3) pour former le past perfect.
