Qu'est-ce que le past perfect continuous ?
Le past perfect continuous (ou past perfect progressive) est un temps verbal en anglais qui exprime une action en cours dans le passé avant une autre action passée. Il met l'accent sur la durée continue d'une action passée qui a eu un effet sur une autre action ou un moment dans le passé.
Exemples :
I had been studying for 3 hours when she arrived.
They had been working all morning before the meeting started.
She had been living in Paris for 5 years before she moved to London.
Structure du past perfect continuous
Formule grammaticale
Le past perfect continuous positif suit la structure : Subject + had + been + verb + -ing
- I had been working
- You had been studying
- He/She/It had been reading
- We had been traveling
- They had been waiting
Le past perfect continuous négatif : Subject + had not (hadn't) + been + verb + -ing
- I had not been eating → I hadn't been eating
- He had not been sleeping → He hadn't been sleeping
- They had not been practicing → They hadn't been practicing
Le past perfect continuous interrogatif : Had + Subject + been + verb + -ing + ?

Utilisation du past perfect continuous
Quand l'utiliser ?
Utilise le past perfect continuous pour exprimer une action qui était en cours dans le passé avant une autre action passée :
- When I arrived, they had been waiting for 2 hours.
- He was tired because he had been running.
- She had been reading for 3 hours when I called.
Utilise-le pour exprimer une action continue sur une durée dans le passé :
- I had been living in that city for 10 years.
- They had been working together since 2015.
- She had been studying French for 5 years before moving to Paris.
Utilise-le quand l'action passée a des effets visibles au moment du discours :
- Why are you so tired? I have been working all day.
- Her eyes are red. She has been crying.
- His hands are dirty. He has been gardening.

Le past perfect continuous est utilisé pour une action en cours interrompue par une autre action passée.

Le past perfect continuous utilise "had been" + verbe + -ing, pas le past participle.

Les verbes d'état comme know, love, like, have (possession) ne s'utilisent pas en continuous.
