Définition

Le past perfect continuous (ou past perfect progressive) est un temps verbal en anglais qui exprime une action en cours dans le passé avant une autre action passée. Il met l'accent sur la durée continue d'une action passée qui a eu un effet sur une autre action ou un moment dans le passé.

Le past perfect continuous exprime une action en cours dans le passé avant une autre action passée !
Structure : Subject + had + been + verb + -ing

Exemples :

I had been studying for 3 hours when she arrived.

They had been working all morning before the meeting started.

She had been living in Paris for 5 years before she moved to London.

  • He was tired because he had been running.

Durée continue dans le passé

Utilise-le pour exprimer une action continue sur une durée dans le passé :

  • I had been living in that city for 10 years.
  • They had been working together since 2015.
  • She had been studying French for 5 years before moving to Paris.
Effet visible d'une action passée

Utilise-le quand l'action passée a des effets visibles au moment du discours :

  • Why are you so tired? I have been working all day.
  • Her eyes are red. She has been crying.
