I have done → He had done
Future → Conditional
will → would

🎯
📋
Méthode : Vérifiez d'abord le verbe introductif, puis appliquez le backshift
Exercice 1

Exercice 2
Change the tense: "I have finished the project," she told me.

Corrigé : Exercices 1 à 5
1 Present Continuous → Past Continuous
Définition :

Present continuous → Past continuous : Changement de temps pour l'action en cours rapportée.

Méthode de backshift :
  1. Vérifier que le verbe introductif est au passé: "said"
  2. Identifier le temps original: "am working" (present continuous)
  3. Appliquer le backshift: present continuous → past continuous
  4. Changer le pronom: "I" → "he"
Étape 1 : Analyser l'énoncé original

"I am working hard," he said

Verbe introductif: "said" (passé simple)

Énoncé: "I am working hard" (présent continu)

Étape 2 : Identifier le temps à modifier

"am working" est au présent continu

Doit être changé en passé continu à cause du backshift

Étape 3 : Appliquer le backshift

Present continuous: am/is/are + -ing

Past continuous: was/were + -ing

"am working" → "was working"

Étape 4 : Changer le pronom personnel

"I" → "he"

Car l'énoncé est rapporté au sujet "he"

Étape 5 : Former la phrase complète

He said (that) he was working hard

Le mot "that" est souvent omis

Réponse finale :

He said (that) he was working hard

Le présent continu "am working" devient passé continu "was working".

Règles appliquées :

Present continuous → Past continuous : am/is/are → was/were + -ing

Backshift condition : Applied when reporting verb is in past tense

Pronoun change : I → he in reported speech

That : Optional after "said"

2 Present Perfect → Past Perfect
Définition :

Present perfect → Past perfect : Changement de temps pour une action achevée rapportée.

Étape 1 : Analyser l'énoncé original

"I have finished the project," she told me

Verbe introductif: "told" (passé simple)

Énoncé: "I have finished the project" (présent parfait)

Étape 2 : Identifier le temps à modifier

"have finished" est au présent parfait

Doit être changé en passé parfait à cause du backshift

Étape 3 : Appliquer le backshift

Present perfect: have/has + past participle

Past perfect: had + past participle

"have finished" → "had finished"

Étape 4 : Changer les pronoms

"I" → "she"

"me" → objet indirect conservé

Étape 5 : Former la phrase complète

She told me (that) she had finished the project

Le temps parfait est maintenu mais reculé

Réponse finale :

She told me (that) she had finished the project

Le présent parfait "have finished" devient passé parfait "had finished".

Règles appliquées :

Present perfect → Past perfect : have/has → had + past participle

Logical sequence : Past perfect shows action completed before reported moment

Pronoun adjustment : I → she in reported speech

Consistency : All tenses shift when main verb is in past

3 Future → Conditional
Définition :

Future → Conditional : Changement de temps pour une action future rapportée.

Étape 1 : Analyser l'énoncé original

"I will attend the meeting," he promised

Verbe introductif: "promised" (passé simple)

Énoncé: "I will attend the meeting" (futur simple)

Étape 2 : Identifier le temps à modifier

"will attend" est au futur simple

Doit être changé en conditionnel à cause du backshift

Étape 3 : Appliquer le backshift

Future simple: will + base verb

Conditional: would + base verb

"will attend" → "would attend"

Étape 4 : Changer le pronom personnel

"I" → "he"

Car l'énoncé est rapporté au sujet "he"

Définition :

Can → Could : Changement de modal pour exprimer la capacité rapportée.

Étape 1 : Analyser l'énoncé original

Verbe introductif: "mentioned" (passé simple)

Énoncé: "I can speak French fluently" (modal "can")

Étape 2 : Identifier le modal à modifier

"can speak" utilise le modal "can"

Doit être changé en "could" à cause du backshift

Étape 3 : Appliquer le backshift au modal

Modal "can" → Modal "could"

"can speak" → "could speak"

Étape 4 : Changer le pronom personnel

"I" → "she"

Car l'énoncé est rapporté au sujet "she"

Étape 5 : Former la phrase complète

She mentioned (that) she could speak French fluently

Le modal "can" devient "could" dans le discours rapporté

Past continuous: was/were + -ing

With backshift: had been + -ing (past perfect continuous)

"was reading" → "had been reading"

Étape 4 : Changer le pronom personnel

"I" → "he"

Car l'énoncé est rapporté au sujet "he"

Étape 5 : Former la phrase complète

He explained (that) he had been reading a book

Le passé continu devient passé parfait continu

Réponse finale :

He explained (that) he had been reading a book

Le passé continu "was reading" devient passé parfait continu "had been reading".

Règles appliquées :

Exceptions au backshift
Vérités universelles
Always true
The sun rises in the east
Verbe introductif présent
Present tense
She says she is happy
Situation toujours vraie
Still true
He lives in Paris
Cas où le backshift n'est pas appliqué

Universal truths : "The earth goes around the sun" → "He said the earth goes around the sun"

Present reporting : "She says she likes coffee" (no backshift)

Still current : "He said he lives in London" (if still true)

Conditional in reported speech : Sometimes remains unchanged

💡
Conseil : Demandez-vous: "Est-ce que cette information est toujours vraie aujourd'hui ?" Si oui, pas de backshift.
Erreurs fréquentes
Erreurs à éviter :
  • Applying backshift unnecessarily : "She says she lived in France" → Should be "lives" if still true
  • Forgetting to change pronouns : "He said I was tired" → Should be "he was tired"
  • Mixing direct and indirect word order : "He asked what did you do" → Should be "what you did"
  • Incorrect modal backshift : "can" → "could" not "can" → "will"
Points clés à retenir :
  • Le backshift s'applique principalement quand le verbe introductif est au passé
  • Les vérités universelles ne subissent pas le backshift
  • Les pronoms doivent être adaptés dans le discours rapporté
  • Les modaux suivent des patrons spécifiques de backshift
